Shevet

Tribe and rod — the small group that disciplines you into who you are called to be.

SHEH-vet

Biblical Meaning

Shevet carries a double meaning: a tribe (a people bound together) and a rod (the shepherd's staff of guidance and correction). The tribe both belongs to you and shapes you.

Historical Context

The twelve tribes (shevatim) of Israel were the structure of belonging and accountability. The same word named the shepherd's rod — the tribe was never only comfort; it was formation.

Scripture

"Your rod (shevet) and your staff, they comfort me."

— Psalm 23:4

"All these are the twelve tribes (shivtei) of Israel."

— Genesis 49:28

"Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another."

— Proverbs 27:17
Practical Application

You cannot become who you are called to be alone. Join a small group that both belongs to you and corrects you. Let the tribe be a rod as well as a refuge.
